There's something special about documenting a family in the home they've made their own.
As an interior designer, this mama had poured so much love into their home, especially her baby girl's nursery. Seven months into motherhood, she was ready to finally get in the frame and document this season of their lives.
So we spent the afternoon at home, letting baby girl lead the way. There was no rushing, no perfect schedule to follow. We stopped for bottles, took breaks when she needed them, and made room for all the little moments in between.
And that's what I love most about sessions like these. The familiar spaces, the everyday routines, the tiny details that might seem ordinary now but will mean everything someday.
A little glimpse of life at home with the Gaydons, just as it was.
Six years. That's how long it had been since the Ferreiras last had family photos taken. Their little boy was just two then, and now, nearly eight, it was time to get everyone back in the frame.
When mom told me she was dreaming of a beach session, I knew exactly where I wanted to take them. One of my favorite stretches of coastline in Point Reyes, where the dunes meet the ocean and the evening light feels like something out of a movie.
We spent the evening running through the sand, dancing in the dunes, sneaking in snuggles, and soaking up the last little bit of sunshine. No pressure to stand still or smile on cue. Just the three of them, together, making up for a little lost time.
A golden evening in the dunes with the Ferreiras, one I'll remember for a long time.
There's something fitting about a place called Heirloom Acres becoming the backdrop for photographs that will someday be family heirlooms of their own.
We spent the morning wandering through the wildflowers, letting their little girl lead the way. We stopped to pick flowers, smell them, sneak in a few snuggles, and explore whatever caught her attention along the way.
And somewhere in between all that playing, we made time for those beautiful family portraits they'll want to frame, share on holiday cards, and look back on for years to come.
That's what I love about child-led sessions. We can make room for the portraits you came for without missing the moments you didn't know you'd want to remember.
A slow summer morning in the garden with the Blairs, exactly as it should be.
Shay and her family recently settled into their forever home in Land Park, and little by little, they're making it their own. One of her favorite spaces is the girls' room, and the moment I stepped inside, I understood why. I called this session "The Dollhouse" for a reason.
We danced around the room, played Candy Land, read books, and let the girls do what they do best. The dog wandered in and out, dad got to take it all in, and eventually we made our way outside for more of the same.
Nothing elaborate, nothing overly planned. Just a morning spent doing the things they would have been doing anyway.
And that's the beauty of photographing families at home. Someday, the girls will be bigger, the rooms will look different, and the routines will change. But they'll always have these little glimpses of what life looked and felt like when they were small.
